Every year, on the Day of the Dice, eligible bachelors roll the dice and call the number of the girl they want to be pledged with.
Elise is dreading standing on a wooden box, waiting for her number to be called. She will be cast with someone… and William Derby seems determined that it’s going to be him. Through the long Freeze, Elise’s days are filled with chopping wood to keep her grandfather warm, and making the broth last longer.
The Thaw is coming, and the Casting is about to begin.
